When Silence is Kept

When silence is kept
because there are no words
or the wrong words
or the words are
too painful to speak.

It’s easier to say nothing. At all.

When my mother got breast cancer,
some called, others offered cards.
Others kept silent.

Was it too scary?
Too close to home?
Easier to avoid?

The cancer exposed our humanity.

When silence is kept,
the soul is

exposed.

It hears the unspoken,
and understands.
